Amazon's home and kitchen category continues to reward well-positioned private-label brands. But the bar for entry has risen — buyers expect better packaging, clearer branding and consistent quality across reorders. Here's how to get it right from the factory up.

Step 1: Choose a category with repeat-purchase potential

Household storage, food containers and kitchen organizers share key traits: high search volume, manageable competition in mid-tier price points and genuine repeat-purchase demand. Avoid hyper-commoditized SKUs where dozens of near-identical listings compete on price alone — differentiation is impossible and margins evaporate.

Step 2: Define your product spec before approaching factories

Factories quote faster and more accurately when you arrive with a clear brief: target dimensions, material requirements (BPA-free? food-grade?), color options and packaging expectations. Vague requests produce vague quotes and slow the process considerably.

Pull the top-reviewed listings in your target category and study the reviews carefully. Note what customers praise and what they complain about — then build those insights directly into your product spec.

Step 3: Prioritize FBA-ready packaging from day one

Amazon's fulfillment requirements are strict and penalties for non-compliance are real. Work with a manufacturer experienced in FBA — poly-bag requirements, suffocation warnings on appropriate items, scannable barcodes at the unit level and correct carton dimensions and labeling. Getting this wrong costs time and money on arrival at the fulfillment center.

Step 4: Order a pre-production sample before committing to bulk

Never skip sampling. Evaluate finish quality, color accuracy, seal performance for containers, and packaging durability under shipping conditions. A reliable manufacturer will support pre-production samples at a reasonable cost, often refundable against your first bulk order.

Step 5: Plan your reorder cycle before you launch

Stockouts kill rankings. Know your factory's production lead time (typically 25–40 days for household plastics), add ocean freight time (18–30 days to US West Coast), and set your reorder trigger accordingly. Most experienced sellers reorder when they have 60–70 days of stock on hand.
