MOQ — Minimum Order Quantity

MOQ is the smallest quantity a factory will produce for a given SKU, typically expressed in pieces or cartons. For household plastic goods, factory MOQs commonly range from 500 to 3,000 pieces per SKU. MOQ exists because line setup, material ordering and changeover create fixed costs that need to be spread across the order.

MOQ is often negotiable — especially for products with existing molds, or when you're ordering multiple SKUs. Don't assume the first number quoted is fixed. A new relationship with clear long-term potential is often grounds for flexibility.

Sampling: pre-production approval

Pre-production (PP) samples confirm color, finish, dimensions and packaging before bulk production begins. Standard lead time for PP samples from a household plastics factory is 7–15 working days. Sample fees range from $50 to $300 per SKU depending on complexity — many factories credit this against your first bulk order. Never approve production based on photos or videos alone. Approve a physical sample you have held in your hands.

Production lead time: the real timeline

Production lead time for household plastics is typically 20–35 working days after you approve the PP sample and release the production deposit. Add to that: ocean freight (18–30 days to US West Coast, 25–35 days to East Coast ports), port and customs clearance (3–7 days), and inland trucking. Your realistic in-hand timeline from order confirmation is 55–80 days. Build this into your inventory planning from day one — stockouts are expensive.

Payment terms: what's standard

For first orders, standard payment terms are 30% deposit before production starts, 70% balance paid before the cargo ships (against copy of bill of lading). As you build a track record with a factory, more favorable terms — net 30 or payment against documents — become available.
